Save and...

Often, it makes sense to give users a Save command that combines an expected next action.

For example, when adding a contact to Outlook, I have three options:

  • Save & Close
  • Save & New
  • New Contact from Same Company

The example above also shows an effective use of visual hierarchy: the primary action has the most visual weight, the secondary action has less weight, and the tertiary option is a menu item under Save & New.

The buttons below are attempting to do the same thing (in this case providing two Save options), but the meaning of the options are less clear. Here, we recommended the buttons be re-labeled  "Save & New" and "Save".
